📰 What Happened: During a recent meeting, Sacramento officials announced a new initiative to build micro-communities for unhoused seniors. Each site will feature 40 fully equipped tiny homes, along with communal kitchens, bathrooms, laundry facilities, internet access, 24/7 security, and personalized support services.

🔍 A Closer Look: Unlike shelters, these micro-communities are designed for 55+ homeless residents, who face unique health and mobility challenges. Residents will also be expected to contribute 30% of their income to shared costs after a 90-day adjustment period, promoting job-seeking and consistent employment.

🧠 Why It Matters: Senior homelessness is one of California’s fastest-growing crises, and traditional shelters often fall short. Although Sacramento already operates 18 shelters with 1,375 beds, these new micro-communities offer an alternative model focused on dignity, autonomy, and long-term stability.
