📰 What Happened: After decades as a NYU Langone parking lot, a city-owned parcel along the East River will be transformed into a public park. Community Board 6 and local leaders pushed for the change after the lease ended in 2023, emphasizing the need for more open space on the East Side. A $600,000 funding boost helped seal the deal.

🔍 A Closer Look: The Economic Development Corporation plans to install fitness equipment, gathering spaces, and other waterfront-friendly elements. Though technically “temporary” due to ongoing waterfront work, officials expect the park to serve the public in the long term. The space could eventually expand promenade access near the NYC Ferry pier.

🧠 Why It Matters: Unlike the Hudson River Greenway, the East Side has limited, fragmented access to the waterfront. This project not only reclaims underused land but sets a precedent for converting more parking into parkland, with advocates eyeing additional opportunities beneath the FDR Drive near Stuyvesant Cove.
