📅 Today's Story: The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) launched a preliminary investigation into about 2,000 Waymo self-driving vehicles after a Georgia incident raised alarms about robotaxi behavior near a stopped school bus.

📰 What Happened: The federal probe was prompted by video footage showing a Waymo vehicle failing to properly stop for a school bus with its red lights flashing and stop arm extended, while children were disembarking. The vehicle initially paused, then slowly maneuvered around the bus. The incident involved one of Waymo’s 5th-generation driverless vehicles.

🔍 A Closer Look: Waymo claims the vehicle sensors didn’t detect the flashing lights and stop arm due to the approach angle, but maintained a safe speed and distance from students. The company has since updated the software, with plans for more updates. The investigation follows a recent NHTSA inquiry into other odd Waymo behaviors, which ended after two recalls.

🧠 Why It Matters: Autonomous vehicles have been ‘the next big thing’ for years now, but implementing these systems is easier said than done. With Waymo's robotaxi fleet now above 1,500 vehicles clocking over 100 million driverless miles, the feds wish to ensure that AVs can safely navigate unpredictable, real-world situations—especially involving children.
