📰 What Happened: Shanghai’s Lin-gang Special Area is now home to the world’s first operational undersea data center. Powered primarily by offshore wind and cooled naturally by seawater, the 24-megawatt facility achieves an impressive energy efficiency rating while cutting land and freshwater usage.

🔍 A Closer Look: Traditional data centers consume vast amounts of energy. Submerging servers in the ocean slashes cooling energy to under 10% and targets a PUE of 1.15—well below China’s 2025 benchmark of 1.25. Wind accounts for 95% of the energy, with massive savings in both space and water.

🧠 Why It Matters: With China pushing to scale its cloud computing industry to $28 billion by 2027, the underwater model could be the eco-efficient urban data storage blueprint of the future. If it works at scale, it could enable coastal cities to process data locally while minimizing the environmental impact.
