📰 What Happened: For decades, housing policy has been hampered by unreliable data. Now, the Census Bureau’s Address Count Listing Files, released every six months, track housing units at the census block level using its Master Address File. This new source captures net production, including conversions and demolitions.

🔍 A Closer Look: Unlike permit surveys or sample-based census tools, the dataset is from multiple high-quality sources, including USPS records and local government submissions. It avoids privacy masking and allows us to measure real housing outcomes in real time, including the effects of zoning changes and infill development.

🧠 Why It Matters: This breakthrough enables better federal incentives, sharper enforcement of state housing laws, and faster local policy iteration. It also eliminates longstanding data blind spots that hindered efforts to evaluate reforms and build more housing nationwide.
